My sister recently died at the Center. She had been in the Geriatric Ward there for over a year, and was gradually failing due to a number of medical conditions. She had the unfortunate need to be in and out of psychiatric care for much of her life, and I routinely visited here. The quality of facilities within the NYS system can vary significantly. One place she was in was a hell-hole. The others were reasonably decent, but the Binghamton facility had the best and most caring staff. I spent many hours with Pat at the Greater Binghamton Center and was favorably impressed by everything I saw. The physical facility was old but well-maintained, patients were treated with caring and respect, it had great professional staff, good medical care was provided, and there were opportunities for recreation for those mentally capable of participating. My family felt very fortunate that my sister could end her life in that setting.
You go through life automatically thinking that it is only in the movies or in the real old days when psychiatric facilities were barbaric and abusive but what a wake up call it is to be locked up in GBHC psychiatric center. Masquerading behind fake "caring" and "proffesional" attitudes and all the right fancy words said in all the right fancy ways, the staff and doctors are so rude, cruel, deceptive, manipulative, hypocritical, controlling and awful that it is almost impossible to tolerate. They emasculate you and mock you and love controlling you and abusing their power and position. They lie in your charts and make you sound crazy or dysfunctional even if theres absolutely nothing wrong with you. They always try to twist what you say and push your buttons and corner you in rediculous, unrealistically inconvenient situations to prove that there is something wrong with you or the way you think. One staff actually admitted while laughing that its an insurance scam saying "if you have been here for 2 weeks and don't know that this is a scam then you really DO need to be here and on meds" she boasted arrogantly that no one would believe that she said that and added "think about where you are and why people are sent here" implying they would just assume I'm incoherent or imagining that she had said that. The staff are so unbelievably cold and cruel and you can tell that they get off from forcing treatment on patients who do not want it or consent. They tell you when you get there that you can refuse the meds but that's a lie, the doctor will just schedule a court hearing and go before a judge where he will talk about you like you are insane and get granted a court order that makes it so that you either take the medicine or they will pin you down and force it into you with a needle. You can tell they enjoy doing that it is obvious from their demeanor, attitudes and expressions. They literally conspire with each other to keep you longer the more you threaten to expose their corruption and play on the fact that lucky for them you are in a mental hospital and so will just sound paranoid or mentally ill. You pay thousands of dollars a day with insurance to be held there against your own will and eat the same food prisons provide that our taxes pay for (its the same company) and sleep on rubber mattresses that are wayyy to small and that your legs hang off of and go numb on and the sheets are all torn and have holes taped with duct tape and have yellow and orange stains all over them. The medicines they force you to take make your joints hurt, dry your skin, make you lose your hair, make you see blurry, and make your brain and thoughts slow, foggy, hazy and make you depressed or irritable (the opposite of what they say they are supposed to do). On the meds getting up each morning is hell. Even if your 19 they make you feel like an old man with bad creaky aching tight joints all over. Avoid the system at all costs. It is pure corruption. They also convince your family that you constantly need meds and therapy and it can destroy your relationship with them because you were the one in the hospital and so you know the truth and your family thinks they are helping you and won't believe you.
They also lied to her and said mom was took out of the building in handcuffs which they did not take her out in handcuffs. The house on the complex for kids to get away, they had a kid that wanted to punch everyone and the girl did something bad while there and blamed my sister for it, so she called us wanting to come home. When we got there the workers lied saying nothing was wrong even though my sister called us crying.
Compared to every place I've seen, the Geriatric Ward at the Greater Binghamton Health Center deserves a rating of 10 out of 10. The facility has adequate space and is well-maintained, but far more importantly it is adequately staffed by competent and caring people.
My family member was here for OCD and everything thing they did was to turn her against mom and me her brother. She believes me and Mom hate her, that we don't care her. It's wrong. We love and care for her so much. Even her current therapist Virginia thinks they did wrong.
